In this demo, I walk students through the first stage of creating a picture - the division of light and dark, a concept which is distinct but overlaps with that of chiaroscuro. Using only two tones, we explore how this abstraction is the underlying architecture of any successful image, and is critical to achieving a sense of tactility in your drawing.
