In this new monthly web-series, I will be teaching an old course I taught in 2021 entitled, “Painting with Tone.” This course was born out of a student asking what the best way is to transition from drawing to painting. Utilizing monochromatic painting, also known as grisaille, I present a variety of different methods and visual paradigms that help students tackle the daunting medium of oil painting in manageable and scaleable ways. The first installment of this series begins with the imprimatura: a wet underpainting technique. Next Month’s installment in August will be on Closed Grisaille.
